Huang was born to diplomats in China but studied in New York and later graduated from Vassar College ('84). After working for socialist causes in Chinese factories, Huang transitioned into the publishing world where she would create the fashion magazine iLook. In 2010, she opened her designer concept boutique Brand New China. She is known as a televison host, author, publisher, actress, blogger, entrepreneur—basically as "China's answer to Oprah Winfrey and Anna Wintor." Time Magazine selected her as one of the world’s 100 most influential people. She now lives with the man who designed and built their house which is 1200m² (12917ft²).
